Teacher's Room is a satirical novel by Markus Orths . The first edition was published by Schöffling in 2003 .

action

The study assessor Kranich has finally been assigned a position at a school by the Baden-Württemberg high school authority, at the fictional Göppingen high school "ERG". Although the novel is told from a first-person perspective , you learn next to nothing about the narrator. The new teacher Kranich is confronted with well-established behavioral concepts in which he initially wants to participate, although their mendacity is evident from the start. The job interview with the school director Höllinger is already groundbreaking: "One could, he said, distinguish between four pillars on which the entire school system is based: The pillars he calls fear, misery, appearances and lies." (2nd chapter)

The novel consistently relies on satirical exaggerations, for example in the characterization of the teaching staff: each colleague always introduces himself briefly military with last name plus subject combination. The author Markus Orths, who initially worked as a teacher himself, woven some popular pedagogical jokes into his novel, such as the one from “threshold didactics”: “And what does that mean? I asked. That you prepare for the lesson, said Renner, when you step over the threshold of the classroom. "(8th chapter)

Structure and style

The novel consists of 20 chapters as well as a prologue and an epilogue. In the dtv edition it is 160 pages long.

Most striking stylistically is the widespread use of indirect speech , which increases the ironic effect.
