Leichhardt (constituency)
The Leichhardt constituency (English: The Division of Leichhardt ) is one of 150 electoral districts that elect Queensland representatives to the Australian House of Representatives .
The constituency of Leichhardt in the state of Queensland was proclaimed in 1949. It was named after the Prussian explorer and scientist Ludwig Leichhardt .
Leichhardt is the largest constituency in Queensland with 148,988 km², stretching from Cairns to the Cape York Peninsula and the Torres Strait Islands . Most of the places in the constituency are small settlements where Aborigines live. The larger towns are Aurukun , Bamaga , Cairns (partially), Cooktown , Hope Vale , Kowanyama , Kuranda , Lockhart River , Mossman , Pormpuraaw , Port Douglas , Thursday Island and Weipa .
Economically, the constituency is primarily characterized by agriculture through the cultivation of sugar cane and tropical fruits, but also by aquaculture , cattle breeding, fishing, mining and tourism.
In the 2010 election year, Warren Decision was elected by the liberal-conservative Liberal National Party of Queensland . 93,113 voters were entitled to vote.
