Leipzig quadruplets

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Leipzig quadruplets born in 2012 are the first known monozygous , monochorionic quadruplets to be born in Germany.

Under the direction of Renaldo Faber, the four girls with identical genetic makeup were born on January 6th at the Leipzig University Hospital .

The quadruplets born in Leipzig in 2017 are quadruplets.

Course of pregnancy and childbirth

The natural multiple pregnancy with a common placenta ran smoothly up to the 28th week of pregnancy (SSW) and was intensively cared for at the Center for Prenatal Medicine in Leipzig. Twelve ultrasound examinations could prove the undisturbed development of all quadruplets up to this point in time. After the acute fetal transfusion syndrome became apparent, Renaldo Faber and Holger Stephan decided to bring the children by caesarean section . The four girls weighed 1050 grams, 986 grams, 1050 grams and 1100 grams at birth.

Medical phenomenon

Statistically, the probability of monozygous, monochorionic quadruplets is 1: 13,000,000 (see multiples ). A fertilized egg cell only divides between the 4th and 8th day of pregnancy, so that only one placenta is formed (monochorionic), but four identical embryos mature in separate fruit cavities (quadramnial). Not only the development of an identical quadruple pregnancy is extremely rare, but also the undisturbed course until all children are viable. Therefore, the birth of monochorionic quadruplets is much rarer than the frequency of occurrence. If one assumes a cumulative frequency of various severe complications such as miscarriage, stillbirth , growth retardation, preeclampsia and all forms of TTTS of around 30 to 50 percent in monochorionic twins , this is to be expected to an even greater extent in monochorionic quadruplets. That is why the completely undisturbed course of the Leipzig quadruplets up to the 28th week of pregnancy, without the need for inpatient care in the hospital, is extraordinary.
