Quiet Fox

The quiet or silent fox

The quiet fox , also called whisper fox , eavesdropping fox or silent fox , is a hand signal in which the index and little finger are stretched upwards while the middle and ring fingers are pressed against the thumb . The head of a fox is imitated, to which the hand signal owes its name. It is also known as the wolf salute , a sign of recognition and greeting used by the Turkish right-wing extremist Gray Wolves .

Areas of application

pedagogy

In the context of education , the quiet fox acts as a sign of non-verbal communication . If the noise level within a group rises above a certain level, the manager can raise his hand and show the quiet fox . The quiet fox has pricked up its ears and closed its mouth. It should encourage the people within the group to imitate the quiet fox - to listen and no longer speak.

The hand signal is mainly used in primary school education and in kindergartens. Due to the similarity to the wolf salute, the quiet fox is increasingly being displaced. Several methods have developed as alternatives, such as the use of acoustic signals (e.g. singing bowls ) or active movement.

Speech therapy

The calming effect is also used in speech therapy . The quiet fox is often used to define communication rules within a family. By calming the competitive speaker environment (“Only one person speaks!”), It is possible to minimize the time pressure when speaking. This has a positive effect on pile-up symptoms , especially in children.

controversy

Wolf greeting

The external form of the hand signal of the quiet fox corresponds to the wolf salute, a sign of recognition and greeting of the gray wolves , a right-wing extremist , nationalist group in Turkey . In addition to the wolf salute, other hand signs are often used, such as the victory sign (V) or the R4bia (four fingers up).

Legal position

  • In Germany, showing the wolf salute is not a criminal offense.
  • In Austria, showing the wolf salute has been a criminal offense since March 1, 2019 (§ 2 Symbols Act ). "The images or symbols used in public areas (eg badges of the gray wolves, wolf salute, logo of the MHP - three white crescents) are considered to be symbols of the right-wing extremist Turkish-nationalist and thus democratic-critical attitude, which is why a ban on the use of symbols seems justified" is an explanatory comment on the Austrian penal provision.

Other uses

The similarity with the gesture Mano cornuta has the cabaret artist Michael Krebs in 2012 for the program Whisper Fox? No thanks! inspired.

It is also a sign of the members of various stables in wrestling at the Bullet Club of New Japan Pro Wrestling and the New World Order in the former WCW .
