history

Leitz file folder

The company was founded in 1871 by the mechanic and invoice book manufacturer Louis Leitz under the name Werkstätte for the production of metal parts for organizing materials . Industrialization and growing bureaucratization led to more and more correspondence, which required a modern solution not only to file but also to organize papers.

The Leitz folder was initially a relatively primitive device for impaling paper between folders. In 1893, the mechanism with lever and bracket came on the market, similar to today's mechanism. In 1911 the finger hole was introduced in the back of the folder.

The first construction of Leitz in Feuerbach was started in 1897 by the architect Gottlob Schäufelen and completed in 1898. The listed factory complex was built in several construction phases between 1897 and 1935 and in the 1960s and 1990s.

In 1998 the company was acquired by the Esselte Group. At the time of the sale, the company had 2,500 employees and achieved sales of 280 million euros. A large part of the employees were laid off at the time.

In 2016, the ACCO Group acquired the Esselte Group from the private equity company JW Childs , to which Leitz also belongs. As part of this, the company was changed from "Esselte Leitz GmbH & Co KG" to "LEITZ ACCO Brands GmbH & Co KG". At the time of the sale, Leitz had 455 employees and sales of 205.8 million euros.
