Leland Stanford Hobbs (born February 24, 1892 in Gloucester , Massachusetts , † March 6, 1966 in Washington, DC ) was an officer in the United States Army , most recently in the rank of 2-star general .
Life
Hobbs grew up in New Jersey and was trained at the United States Military Academy at West Point . His senior class in June 1915 included Henry Aurand , Omar N. Bradley , Dwight D. Eisenhower , Joseph T. McNarney, and James A. Van Fleet . For this reason, this year in the USA is also known as "The class the stars fell on" ( The year on which the [general] stars fell / rained down. ).
During the First World War Hobbs was deployed in France . During the Second World War he commanded the 30th US Infantry Division as major general in the European theater of war.
In April 1945 units of this division advanced towards Braunschweig from the west . On April 10, they reached the Wedtlenstedter lock on the Salzgitter branch canal . There in the evening hours between Hobbs and the combat commander of the city Lieutenant General Karl Veith the first negotiations about the surrender of the city of Braunschweig took place, but they failed after just a few minutes. The protocol of the handover of the city of Braunschweig was not signed until April 12, 1945 , after which the city was occupied without a fight.
After the end of the war he was among other things commander of the IX. US Corps in Japan . In 1953 Hobbs was retired.
Hobbs died in Walter Reed Military Hospital and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery . He was married to Lucy Davis Hobbs (1892-1980).
