Lemonia balcanica , sometimes called Balkan lemoniidae called, is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of lemoniidae .

The wingspan of the moths is 45 to 50 millimeters for the females and 35 to 45 millimeters for the males. The basic color of the fore and hind wing upper side is mostly light yellow-brown. A whitish transverse line stands out on all wings, delimiting the somewhat darkened submarginal region . There is a distinct, black-brown discoidal spot on the forewings . The antennae are long and dense on both sides of the males, and shorter combed in the females.
Caterpillar
Adult caterpillars are dark brown to purple-brown in color and have thin white-yellow hairs. Younger stages show orange-colored point warts on the back and whitish flanks.
distribution and habitat
Lemonia balcanica occurs in Europe in the Balkans . The specific epithet balcanica is derived from this. Outside of Europe, the species can be found in Afghanistan . The main habitat are hilly, dry areas as well as fallow meadows and forest edges.
Way of life
The nocturnal moths form one generation per year, which can be found in September and October. You are flying towards artificial light sources . Food plants of the caterpillars are dandelion (Taraxacum) , dandelion (Leontodon) and hawkweed (Hieracium).
