Lemuel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lemuel is a male given name from the Old Testament .

According to the Book of Proverbs (Proverbs of Solomon), Lemuel was the name of a king that is not mentioned anywhere else ( Prov 31.1  EU , Prov 31.2  EU and 31.4 EU ). The translation of the Hebrew meaning is "devoted to God". Etymologically, the name goes back to Lael (about "for God" in Numbers 3.24  EU ); in this he resembles the name Jamuel ( Gen 46.10  EU ) and Namuel ( 1 Chr 4.24  EU ).

In world literature, the name went down as the first name of the protagonist in Jonathan Swift's satire Gulliver's Travels . The modern book of revelation, the Book of Mormon, names one Lemuel among the two sons of Lehi . In the United States in particular, Lemuel was a common given name and is so to the present day.
