Lena (test picture)
Lena (also Lenna ) is one of the most popular test images in image processing . It is often used when, for example, the functionality of certain algorithms is demonstrated in textbooks or slide presentations , or the image resolution is to be displayed. As a result, Lena has achieved a certain cult status in computer science circles.
One of the reasons why the picture is so suitable as a test object is that it consists of both large, simple areas and areas with lots of details. However, it is slightly contaminated by noise, so that tests and evaluations of image algorithms in which noise or its statistical properties play a role may be slightly affected.
The original Lena picture comes from the US November issue of the men's magazine Playboy in 1972. It shows the Swedish playmate Lena Söderberg (called "Lenna Sjööblom" by the playboy). As an exception, Playboy decided not to pursue copyright infringement for this image.
The original of the section used as a test image is in the image database of the Signal & Image Processing Institute at the University of Southern California ( USA ). It measures 512 × 512 pixels and has a size of 768 KB .
It is known about the portrayed Lena Söderberg that she was born on March 21, 1951 in Sweden, in 1988 learned about the misappropriation of her photo from a journalist in a computer magazine and was invited to the 50th birthday of the Society for Imaging Science and Technology conference in 1997 , where she signed autographs and posed with the visitors for souvenir photos. Lena Söderberg had a similar appearance at the IEEE Conference on Image Processing 2015, at which she presented the IEEE publication awards to the winners and posed for photos. She is married and has three children.
