Leoš Faltus

Leoš Faltus (born July 21, 1937 in Jablonné nad Orlicí ) is a Czech composer and music teacher.

Faltus studied piano at the Brno Conservatory from 1952 to 1958 with Anna Skalicka and from 1955 composition with František Suchy and Osvald Chlubna . From 1958 to 1962 he continued his education at the Janáček Music Academy (JAMU) with Vilém Petrželka and Theodor Schaefer , from 1969 to 1971 he completed a postgraduate course in electronic and experimental music here.

After completing his military service, Faltus taught piano and music theory from 1964 to 1968 at the Music Academy in Břeclav. Until 1990 he taught at the educational science faculty of Masaryk University , after his habilitation in 1990 he was dean for science, art, research and international relations.

In 1992 he moved to JAMU and initially headed the department for composition and conducting at the music faculty, he also taught composition. In 1998 he was appointed professor and in 2000 he was elected Vice Rector for Research, Development and International Relations.

Faltu's works include stage works (including two operas and a ballet), chamber and vocal music as well as orchestral works, including several symphonies, a violin, a double bass and a bassoon concerto. Since 1978 he has been working on the complete critical edition of Leoš Janáček's works . Together with Miloš Štědroň , he reconstructed his scores for the symphony The Danube and the violin concerto, and also arranged a series of Moravian dances for violin and piano.
