Leo Thomas McCauley

Leo Thomas McCauley (* 1895 ; † 1974 ) was an Irish diplomat.

McCauley attended St. Columb's College in Derry and studied at the National University of Ireland . He was then accepted into the Irish Bar ( King's Inns ). In 1922 McCauley joined the Treasury Department. In 1929 he moved to the Foreign Ministry and immediately became First Secretary at the Irish Embassy in Berlin , which he remained until 1932. From 1932 to 1933 he was chargé d'affaires at the embassy. This was followed by post as chargé d'affaires at the embassy to the Holy See (1933 to 1934), and consul general in New York City (1934 to 1946). As Irish Consul General, he took part in the 1939 World's Fair in New York . In 1949 McCauley became envoy to Spain . A year later he was promoted to ambassador in 1950. He held this office until 1955. From 1955 to 1956 he was ambassador to Canada and then from 1956 to 1962 he was again diplomatically active as ambassador to the Holy See .
