Leonardo Legaspi Co (born December 29, 1953 , † November 15, 2010 ) was a Filipino scientist and specialist in botany and plant taxonomy . Its botanical author abbreviation is " Co ".

He was President of the Philippine Native Plants Conservation Society until his death . Co achieved international renown as a botanist through the discovery of a number of endemic plants in the Philippines, such as Rafflesia leonardi (named after him).

Co studied at the University of the Philippines , Diliman in 1972, where he obtained his Bachelor in Botany (BS Botany). In 1977 Co wrote a manual of some of the Philippine medicinal plants , which was published by the UP Botanical Society.

Co worked as a botanist for Conservation International-Philippines . In 2008 Co discovered Rafflesia leonardi, the fourth species of the Rafflesia family on Luzon , and the eighth species in the Philippines. This rafflesia is considered to be the largest flower in the world.

Co worked as a consultant on a reforestation project for the Energy Development Corporation . Co and four colleagues went to investigate the forest of Kananga , Leyte , in 2010 . There they got caught in the exchange of fire between the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the rebel group Nuevo Ejército del Pueblo (New People's Army). Co, his colleague Sofronio Cortez and the local farmer Julius Borromeo were killed. The farmer Policarpio Balute and the forester Ronino Gibe survived.

After an investigation, it was found that the Philippine Army had killed Co and his companions.
