Leonardo da Vinci's bridge design

The Leonardo Bridge is an arch construction that was first documented in the form of a sketch by the Italian Renaissance artist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) in his Codex Atlanticus , dated 1478–1518.

Construction principle

The basic idea is to transfer the braiding principle to rigid components. In this way, the components support one another through clever interlocking. Fixing means such as dowels , screws , nails or ropes are not necessary.

Originally, the bridge was intended as a transportable construction made of round timber and ropes for the military. It is not known whether it was ever used. In addition to the actual Leonardobrücke, there is at least one other construction principle for a self-supporting arch construction.
