Leonardo Visconti di Modrone (born February 3, 1947 in Milan ) is an Italian diplomat.

Leonardo Visconti di Modrone comes from one of the great Italian noble families, the Milanese noble family Visconti . He is the fourth of six children from the marriage of Count Raimondo Visconti di Modrone (1907–1983) and his wife Elena Castellini. Leonardo Visconti has been married to Anna Sanfelice di Monforte dei Duchi di Bagnoli (* Naples February 9, 1943) since 1971; there are three daughters from the marriage.

The Counts Visconti di Modrone, in Primogenitur since 1813 (by Napoleon I) Dukes of Modrone, are a younger branch of the Visconti Dukes, who died in 1447 .

Life

Leonardo Visconti studied economics at the Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi in Milan, where he also obtained a Dr. sc. oec. et commerc. received his doctorate. After military service with the Italian Air Force, he joined the Italian diplomatic service in 1971 and initially worked in the General Directorate for Political Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, from 1973 he was its secretary. From September to December 1973 he was a participant in the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York. From 1974 to 1977 he worked at the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations, from 1975 its First Secretary of the Legation. In 1975/76 Visconti was a member of the Italian delegation on the executive committee of the United Nations Security Council and Italian representative on the UN sanctions committee. In 1977 he moved to the Italian embassy in Cairo as commercial attaché and consul. In 1981 he worked for the Council of Ministers and from 1983 to 1988 Deputy Diplomatic Advisor in the office of the Prime Minister of Italy. In 1988 he moved to the Italian Embassy in London as a press attaché. During his work in the office of the Prime Minister (1992–1997) and in the office of the President of the Council of Ministers (1993–1997) he was responsible for the organization and coordination of the G7 summit in Naples in 1994 .

During his work at the Italian embassy in Vienna (1997-2001), he was appointed ambassador sent in 1998. From 2002 to 2004 he was Head of the Delegation for the Organization of the Italian Presidency of the Council of the European Union . From 2005 he headed the Protocol of the Republic of Italy.

In 2008 he was appointed ambassador. He was Italy's ambassador in Madrid from 2010 to 2013 .

From 2013 to 2016 he was President of Villa Vigoni (Villa Vigoni - German-Italian Center for European Excellence).

Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem

Leonardo Visconti di Modrone is a member of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and has been a member of the Grand Magisterium, the highest governing body, since 2014.

On June 29, 2017, he was appointed by Cardinal Grand Master Edwin Frederick O'Brien to succeed Agostino Borromeo in the office of Governor General of the Papal Laity Order, the highest secular office of the Order based in the Vatican.

On October 24, 2017 Visconti di Modrone received his doctorate from Grand Cross Knight to Collar Knight by Cardinal Grand Master Edwin Frederick O'Brien.
