Leonhard Selle

Leonhard Selle (born November 18, 1816 in Gelting ; † July 21, 1884 in Tönning ) was a German teacher and organist .

Selle received the school leaving certificate at the Flensburg School of Academics in 1837 and then attended a school teacher seminar in Tondern , which he completed in 1842. Here he met Klaus Groth .

In February 1843 Selle moved to Landkirchen on the island of Fehmarn and took the position of teacher and organist at the church . In 1847 he brought the sick Groth to Landkirchen and housed him until his recovery in 1853. During these six years, Groth's collection of Low German poems, Quickborn, was created . Several of the Quickborn's poems were set to music by Selle.

For health reasons he gave up his post in Landkirchen in 1855 and moved to Rendsburg , where he worked as a private music teacher . In 1859 he became an elementary teacher at the free and poor school in Rendsburg. Later he took over the office of organist at the Marienkirche . Leonhard Selle married his widowed sister-in-law Pauline, born on July 21, 1865. Friezes.

On April 1, 1884, Selle resigned from his offices. After his death on July 21, 1884 in Tönning, he was buried in the St. Marien cemetery in Rendsburg.

Leonhard Selles younger brother Christian August Thomas was a Lutheran preacher in Chicago , his eldest brother Gustav (* 1808) was a teacher and organist in Rendsburg.
