Leonid Polterovich ( Russian Леонид В. Полтерович ; Hebrew ליאוניד פולטרוביץ; *  August 30, 1963 in Moscow ) is a Russian-born Israeli mathematician who studies symplectic geometry and dynamic systems.

Polterovich attended Lomonosov University from 1979 , with a diploma in mechanics in 1984. He then worked until 1987 as an engineer at the state energy research institute "Krzhizhanovsky" in Moscow and from 1987 to 1989 as a scientist in calibration. However, in the 1980s he published some papers on dynamic systems. In 1990 he received his PhD in mathematics from Tel Aviv University under Jakow Sinai and Vitali Milman ( Topology Invariants of Lagrange Embeddings and Hamiltonian Dynamics ). In 1991 he became Senior Lecturer there, Associate Professor in 1994 and Professor in 1996. From 2005 to 2007 he was chairman of the Faculty of Pure Mathematics at Tel Aviv University. In 2009 he was visiting professor at the University of Chicago and in 1997/98 at the ETH Zurich . In 2010 he was visiting professor at MSRI .

Polterovich deals with Hamiltonian dynamic systems, symplectic geometry and contact manifolds. He achieved new results with complex analytical methods. With Eliashberg he solved the problem of the Lagrange knot in 4-manifolds.

In 1996 he received the EMS Prize . In 1998 he was invited speaker at the ICM in Berlin (Geometry on the group of Hamiltonian Diffeomorphisms). In 2003 he received the Michael Bruno Prize from the Rothschild Foundation. In 1998 he received the Erdős Prize . In 2016 he gave a plenary lecture at the European Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin (Symplectic rigidity and quantum mechanics).

Paul Biran is one of his doctoral students .
