The American Leopard Hound is a dog breed from the USA that is not recognized by the FCI . The breed is recognized by the UKC and is listed by the AKC for possible recognition in its Foundation Stock Service .
Origin and history
According to the UKC standard , the American Leopard Hound goes back to dogs of the Spanish conquerors who mixed with native dogs in the area of what is now Mexico . As a result, these dogs were first used further north for bear hunting and then developed into a versatile hunting dog .
In 1960, breeders of the breed merged to form the American Leopard Cur Breeders Association . The breed was recognized as a Leopard Cur by the UKC in 1998 ; In 2008 the name was changed to American Leopard Hound . On September 19, 2012, the AKC added the breed to its Foundation Stock Service for possible recognition .
description
The American Leopard Hound is a medium to large, sturdy cur- type hunting dog that is slightly longer than it is tall. The head is broad, with a moderately developed stop and a strong muzzle. The lop ears are set high, the tail straight and of any length. The coat is thick and close fitting.
The coat color is spotted like a leopard (similar to the Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog ) in the colors yellow, black, brindle , black and tan , red, blue or mouse-colored. White spots and a white collar are allowed as long as the white content does not exceed a third of the body surface.
Essence and use
Today, the breed is mainly used as a tree dog , i.e. as a hunting dog that chases its prey up a tree and barks there (such as coonhounds ). The ability to keep a prey unharmed is considered particularly important. In addition to hunting small prey, the breed is also used to hunt bears and pumas .
