Léopold Wiener (born July 2, 1823 in Venlo ; † February 11, 1891 in Brussels ) was a Belgian sculptor , engraver and medalist .

Wiener first learned the trade as an engraver and medalist from his brother Jacques. From 1840 he perfected his skills at the academy in Brussels and at David d'Angers in France, and then in 1845 he took up a job at the Paris mint at JJ Barren. In 1847 he returned to his home in Brussels, where he found a new field of activity as the chief engraver of the Belgian mint.

Life's work

In the following years he cut around 150 coins and medals for the Belgian mint as well as artistic commemorative and honorary medals for the Belgian royal family. On November 17, 1848, the first Belgian postage stamp appeared, with a significant contribution from his brother Jacques. This 10 centimes stamp was printed in brown on white paper, measuring 22 mm by 18.5 mm. As a central element of the picture it shows King Leopold I in uniform.

Significant works

In 1862, a Belgian 20 franc gold coin was minted for the first time by the Royal Mint in Brussels. His signature L. WIENER can be found along the lower neckline . During the reign of King Leopold II , another 20 franc gold coin followed, which was much more detailed. On the occasion of King Leopold II's accession to the throne - on December 17, 1865 - he created the Coronation Medal of Honor.

Wiener was awarded the Belgian Leopold Order for his “work” . A street in Brussels was named after him.
