Lepidocephalichthys ( Gr .: "Lepis" = scale; "kephale" = head; "ichthys" = fish) is a genus of fish from the family of the wolffish (Cobitidae). The bottom-living freshwater fish are found in Pakistan, India , Bangladesh , Sri Lanka , southern China and Southeast Asia , including western Indonesia .

They live in the most varied of habitats, in swamps, ponds, lakes, rice fields, but also in flowing mountain streams.

features

Lepidocephalichthys species have an elongated, slender body that is strongly flattened at the sides, but is not as eel-shaped as the thorn eyes . Depending on the species, their length is 3.3 to 8 centimeters. From the closely related genus Lepidocephalus , to which they are counted as a subgenus by some authors, they differ in the lack of scales on the top of the head and the dorsal and ventral fins arranged further forward . The mouth is surrounded by three pairs of barbels. In most types of Lepidocephalichthys , the sexes can be distinguished. In some males the seventh and eighth fin rays of the pectoral fins are thickened and fused together and form a vertically standing bone plate, in others the second pectoral fin ray is thickened and serrated. The purpose of these particular altered pectoral fin rays is unknown. They may be used in mating.

Most species are brownish marbled or spotted, at least one species ( Lepidocephalichthys lorentzi ) has a bar pattern similar to that of the non-monochrome thorn-eye species.
