The Lepsius House

The Lepsiushaus in Potsdam is a German-Armenian-Turkish research and meeting place in Potsdam , which opened in 2011 in the former villa of the theologian, orientalist and Armenian activist Johannes Lepsius (1858–1926).

The Villa

The villa, which was built between 1780 and 1820 at Grosse Weinmeisterstraße 45 in the Potsdam suburb of Nauen , is located at the foot of the Pfingstberg and, together with Villa Henckel , Villa Quandt and Villa Schlieffen, is one of the elegant villas in this area. In 1868 the Berlin banker and owner of the neighboring villa Hermann Henckel acquired it and converted it. Johannes Lepsius lived here from 1908 to 1926.

The Lepsiushaus houses the Johannes Lepsius Archive and the extensive library of the church historian Hermann Goltz (1946-2010), who initiated the founding of the Lepsiushaus.

A permanent exhibition and a memorial room provide information about the life of Johannes Lepsius, who played an important, and sometimes controversial, role in the history of German-Turkish and German-Armenian relations. Lepsius tried to publicize the genocide of the Armenians in Germany in books and brochures during the First World War . Furthermore, the Lepsiushaus organizes the "Lepsius Forum" in the form of lectures, seminars and conferences on recent research results "on the Armenian question in Turkey since the 19th century".

The main political goal is the future-oriented processing of German-Armenian-Turkish history, quote:

“A special goal is to set up workshops in which Armenians, Turks and Germans work on perspectives for reconciliation and the creation of a common future. With these offers, the Lepsius House wants to contribute to a lasting understanding between Armenians, Turks and Germans. Truth and reconciliation are not understood as opposites, but as mutually complementary, indispensable conditions for gaining a sustainable common future. "

The head of the Lepsiushaus is the journalist and author Rolf Hosfeld .
