Leptocereus leonii is a species of plant in the genus Leptocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet leonii honors the French author of the Flora de Cuba Hermano León (1871–1955).

Leptocereus leonii grows shrubby to tree-like, is richly branched and reaches heights of up to 5 meters. A trunk with a diameter of up to 30 centimeters is often formed. The uppermost shoot segments reach a diameter of 1 to 2 centimeters. There are six to eight ribs that are noticeably notched. The persistent, needle-like, yellowish thorns turn gray with age. They are 2 to 9 inches long.

The bell-shaped, somewhat pink to reddish flowers are up to 3.5 centimeters long. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with short thorns. The spherical to uniform fruits are hardly thorny and have a diameter of up to 2 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Leptocereus leonii is endemic to the Sierra de Anafe and Sierra del Esperón in western Cuba .

It was first described in 1912 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose . A synonym is Cereus leonii Vaupel (1912).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. listed as critically endangered.
