Flyvergrillen ( German for Flieger-Grill ) is a food stand on the Danish island of Amager , which is located at the end of Amager Landevej on the edge of Copenhagen-Kastrup Airport . The food stand is located in Kastrup in Tårnby Kommune , a suburb of Copenhagen . The sales booth achieved greater popularity as a focal point that was heavily frequented by aircraft spotters, from which an unobstructed view of the airport runways was offered from its own viewing platform . With an entry on the website 1001 fortællinger om Danmark (1001 stories about Denmark), the authority Kulturarvsstyrelsen raised the Flyvergrillen to one of Denmark's cultural assets in May 2010 .

history

The catering business started its business at its current location in April 1972 as an ice cream van - against initial resistance from the airport operators. After a viewing platform was built for safety reasons, the operators of the international airport finally gave in. With increasing success - caused by airplane spotters often staying for several hours - the range was expanded to include sausages and Danish hot dogs until enough capital was available for a permanent sales stand and at the end of the 1980s the snack stand was expanded to its current size. In 1991 the current owner, Janni Eilsø, took over the business.

Flyvergrillen regularly experienced a large number of aircraft spotters, Danish media representatives and other curious people when the presidential plane Air Force One arrived , as was the case with US President Bill Clinton in 1997 and George W. Bush in July 2005, which attracted around 1000 people Stand populated. On the occasion of Barack Obama's arrival in Kastrup on October 2, 2009, an Obama burger was specially created which, in a sesame soft roll, contained beef, bacon , lettuce, tomato, onions and cheese as well as fried eggs and ketchup The takeaway operator should look “typically American”. Another rush of several hundred airplane enthusiasts was experienced in September 2010 when the A380 wide-body aircraft landed in Denmark for the first time.

The eruption of Eyjafjallajökull in March 2010, during which volcanic ash in the atmosphere impaired air traffic and therefore the airspace was closed, caused the snack stand to suffer considerable sales losses, as a quarter of the customers were absent with the mocking regular customers. During this time, the menu was expanded to include the Vulkan burger .

Outside there is the viewing platform, which can only be reached via the entrance to the snack stand, on which telescopes have been set up for those interested . In order to offer bored children an alternative to flying , a playground was created that is equipped with a slide . A 2008 conferred special prize of the Association of Danish journalists flight (Danske Flyvejournalister) amounting to 10,000 Danish kroner was used in order to invest in the spectator facilities.
