features

The birds of this genus are 110 to 150 cm long and have a wingspan of 210 to 250 cm. They are black on the top and on the wings and white on the belly and underside of the tail. The scavengers have a large, thick beak on their bare head. The juveniles are a less colorful version of the adults. Unlike most storks, the marabous do not fly with their necks stretched out, but, like herons, with a curved neck.

behavior

Maraboos are sociable birds that build their large clumps on trees in breeding colonies in wetlands. The diet includes carrion , frogs , insects , young birds, lizards and rodents .

Occurrence

The Sunda marabou and the Argala marabou live in South Asia ; the marabou in sub- Saharan Africa .

attitude

The marabou, native to Africa, is relatively often kept in zoological gardens and has been bred frequently in recent years. The Cottbus zoo alone managed to raise 100 young birds between 1996 and 2006. The Argala marabou, on the other hand, is only represented by a few individual animals in the zoos of Europe and North America. The first European breeding of the Sunda marabou was also achieved in 2006 by the Cottbus Zoo.
