Reading belt at the Zollern colliery : The workers stood on both sides between the belt and the trolley behind them
In the unheated work area there was a "heated bench"

Reading belt is the name for a conveyor belt or link belt that was used to free the coal that was being extracted from foreign matter, mainly rock.

The coal wagons transported from the mine were emptied onto the reading belt. In addition to the lump coal, these often contained various proportions of rock, sometimes also pit wood that was no longer required on site and defective tools . The workers stood at the side of the conveyor belt, read the foreign matter from the belt and threw them sorted into the trucks behind them . At the end of the belt, the lump coal fell into railroad cars below for removal. The work on the bookmark was dirty and very exhausting because of the constantly bent posture. The work on the bookmark was carried out by young miners and partially disabled people, that is, “graduated” miners with an accident pension; during the world wars in the German Reich also by forced laborers and women.
