history

Friedrichsort lighthouse with the base of the old tower

On Friedrichsorter Enge , where the Kiel Fjord is only about 1.9 kilometers wide, there has been a beacon since 1815. The first was a wooden beacon, which was built on the Prince George Bastion in 1807 , but was not put into operation until 1815. Between 1853 and 1864, an iron light barge stood on the offshore sandbank as a replacement for the beacon. After it was destroyed by ice drifts, a lighthouse was built at this point in 1866 and in 1889 it was raised to a height of 14.5 meters. After this tower had stood there for over 100 years, construction of today's lighthouse began in 1965, as the height of the old tower was no longer sufficient. The construction of the new tower was completed in 1971. Commissioning took place on October 29, 1971. Both towers stood next to each other until 1973. The foundations of the old lighthouse can still be seen a few meters from the new tower.

The tower house of the old tower stood at the boat harbor in Kiel city center from 1973 to 2002 and has been in the Friedrichsort district on Friedrichsorter Straße again since 2003. In 1990 the new tower was renovated and additionally equipped with a fog fire. The tower shaft, encased in white tiles, was protected by an aluminum cladding. Today the tower is controlled remotely from the traffic control center in Travemünde , the water and shipping authority Lübeck is responsible for its maintenance.

Technical specifications

The beacon is equipped with ten sectors and has three different clock identifiers. The tower also has a fog sound system, a radio transmitter and water level monitoring. The construction costs of the tower amounted to 158,000 German marks.
