The Holtenau lighthouse is located on the north bank of the entrance to the Kiel Canal in Kiel-Holtenau and has served as an entrance light since 1895. The tower is a navigation mark and memorial and is one of the most beautiful lighthouses in Germany.

history

1894 The foundation stone is built into a chamber in the base of the lighthouse.

The predecessor of the lighthouse stood directly in front of the canal packing house in Holtenau and marked the entrance to the Eider Canal , the predecessor of the Kiel Canal , for a few years .

The current lighthouse Holtenau was built on a small hill made of excavated material from the Kiel Canal, which was heaped up in front of the original bank. The lighthouse was built by the Kiel company Rower. The height of the Holtenau lighthouse is 20 meters, including the beacon 24 meters. The nominal range of his beacon is 11 nautical miles for white, 9 for red and 8 for green  .

The foundation stone with the founding document for the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal (Kiel Canal) is located in the tower foundation . Stereo photographs shown on glass plates are also said to have been walled into the foundation stone. The foundation stone was laid on June 3, 1887 and was carried out by Kaiser Wilhelm I.

In the octagonal "Drei-Kaiser-Halle" above, the three German Emperors Wilhelm I , Friedrich III , who was in office during the canal construction . and Wilhelm II . The mosaics in the hall were made by the Berlin company Puhl & Wagner . On the facade there is a plaque with the following inscription: Kaiser Wilhelm II. Consecrated the Kiel Canal and handed it over to world traffic on June 21, 1895 .

A semicircular relief is embedded above the main entrance, showing the two mermaids "North Sea" and "Baltic Sea" shaking hands. In the background you can see the lighthouses of the two canal entrances in Holtenau and Brunsbüttel. The northern facade was originally decorated with a sculpture by the Berlin sculptor Ernst Herter . It was a bronze replica of the dragon bow of a Viking ship. Presumably it was melted down during the Second World War , as was the imposing Kaiser Wilhelm monument that stood next to the lighthouse.

The tower today

The Holtenau lighthouse was completely renovated in 1995 to mark the 100th birthday of the Kiel Canal. Today it is surrounded by a green area, the octagonal substructure of the brick tower also serves as a wedding room. On the south bank, the entrance is marked by a simply designed, white and red lattice tower.

Philatelic

In the stamp series Lighthouses of Deutsche Post AG , a postage stamp was issued with a nominal value of 45 euro cents. The design comes from Johannes Graf from Dortmund. The first day of issue was June 8, 2017.
