Lev Naumowitsch Shevrin

Lev Naumowitsch Shevrin ( Russian Лев Наумович Шеврин , English transcription Lev Shevrin; born January 4, 1935 in Sverdlovsk ) is a Russian mathematician who deals with algebra and mathematics education.

Life

Shevrin earned his diploma in mathematics in 1957 at the Ural State University in Sverdlovsk, where he received his doctorate in 1961 under Pyotr Grigoryevich Kontorovich and habilitated in 1966 ( Russian doctorate ). Since 1968 he has held the chair for algebra and geometry there.

As a scientist, he is a specialist in the theory of semigroups .

Schewrin is known as an author of mathematical children's books. He regularly gave courses and lectures for mathematics teachers in the Soviet Union. In 1990 he received the José Vasconcelos World Prize for Education from the World Council of Culture for his work in mathematics education .

His PhD students include Olga Kharlampovich , Mark Sapir (Vanderbilt University), Mikhail Vladimirovich Volkov (Urals State University) and Avraham Trakhtman .
