Leviathan is an American power and progressive metal band from Littleton , Colorado that was formed in 1989, disbanded in 1998 and has been active again since 2009.

history

The band was formed in 1989 by guitarists Ronnie Skeen and Steve Fugate and singer Tom Braden. The line-up was completed by drummer Ty Tammeus and bassist James Escobedo. Through tape was named after a pseudonym of Harry Conklin ( Jag Panzer ) during his time at Satan's Host . After Fugate was replaced by John Lutzow, a first self-titled EP was released in 1991. On the following album Deepest Secrets Beneath , which was recorded in 1993, Jack Aragon was represented as the new singer. After that the band almost broke up. Skeen and Lutzow managed to win new members, so that Jeff Ward took over the vocals, Derek Blake the bass and Trevor Helfer took over the drums. With this line-up, they recorded the second album Riddles, Questions, Poetry, & Outrage in 1996 . Through the album, the group reached a recording deal with Century Media . In 1997 the band performed at the Powermal Festival in Baltimore . In the same year, the next album Scoring the Chapters was released . Due to problems with the label, as well as musical exhaustion, the band split up in 1998.

In 2001 guitarist Lutzow and bassist Derek Blake formed a new project called Braver Since Then. In 2007 this project started looking for a new drummer, whereupon Trevor Helfer, formerly employed at Leviathan, became aware of the group. This led to a revival of the Leviathan project in 2009, in which she planned a concert for the reunification in January 2010. The concert was released on DVD and CD. After the group had also developed new material, the studio album At Long Last, Progress Stopped to Follow was released in early 2011 . After two years of work, which corresponds to about 2,000 hours of work, the next album, Beholden to Nothing, Braver Since Then, followed .

style

In the foreword of an interview with John Lutzow, Michael Kohsiek from Rock Hard explained that the band played power metal in the beginning and that since Scoring the Chapters they have increasingly focused on progressive metal. According to Lutzow, Beholden to Nothing, Braver Since Then is about topics such as "Politics, financial hardship, achieving happiness even though you have nothing, greed, a responsible life, honesty - and in the main track of the album of course religion and everything its consequences ”. He mentions films as influences, which can also be seen in various quotes from Quiz Show , Captain America , The Rum Diary , Shameless , The Exorcist and Mr. Show with Bob and David , as well as Bill Maher on the album. According to Andreas Schöwe from Metal Hammer, the band play "melodic Power Metal garnished with progressive breaks " on Riddles, Questions, Poetry, & Outrage and compared them with Nevermore . Leviathan, however, relies on calm passages, while Nevermore's works are more turbulent. The arrangements would be partially reminiscent of The Bard's Song by Blind Guardian .
