Lev Alexandrovich Schurbin

Lev Alexandrowitsch Schurbin ( Russian Лев Александрович Журбин , also transcribed Lev Zhurbin or Ljova ; born August 18, 1978 in Moscow ) is a Russian composer, arranger and violist.

The son of the composer Alexander Schurbin and the poet Irena Ginzburg had viola lessons from Galina Turchaninowa , the teacher of Maxim Vengerov and Vadim Repin , from the age of four . He came to the USA with his parents in 1990 and studied at the Juilliard School of Music with Samuel Rhodes , violist of the Juilliard String Quartet .

Zhurbin composed more than 70 works for classical ensembles, jazz and folk groups, as well as more than 20 film scores. In 2005 he attended the Sundance Institute's Film Composers Lab . In 2007 he worked with Osvaldo Golijov on the composition of the music for Francis Ford Coppola's film Youth without Youth . After a stay at the Banff Center, Canada in 2008, he gave guest lectures on film music composition at New York University .

As a violist, Zhurbin leads his own group Ljova and the Kontraband , is a member of the gypsy orchestra Romashka and the contemporary music ensemble Percussia, and forms the duo Joint Custody with Jakub Omsky . As an arranger he worked a. a. for Yo-Yo Mas Silk Road Ensemble , the Kronos Quartet , Jay-Z , Gustavo Santaolalla , Osvaldo Golijov and Alondra de la Parra . He played a viola by Alexander Tulchinsky and a six-string "Famiola" by Eric Aceto .
