Lewinia is a genus that is represented by three species. These are the Krickrale , the Aucklandrale and the Luzonrale , which were previously placed in the genus Rallus . However, the skeletons of these rails do notmatchthose of the genus Rallus . On the other hand, they show a superficial resemblance to the gray chestnut , which today belongs to the genus Gallirallus . Storrs Lovejoy Olson stated in 1973 that the representatives of the genus Lewinia are more primitive than the gray-breasted barrels. Olson suspects a close relationship with the much larger Cuvier rail ( Dryolimnas cuvieri ) from Madagascar , as the skeletal structure is almost identical. In their 1990 avian systematics, Charles Sibley and Burt L. Monroe, Jr. were of the opinion that there is no close relationship between the genera Dryolimnas and Lewinia . The rails of this genus reach sizes between 17 and 27 centimeters.

Systematics

Species and their distribution:

  • The crawfish ( Lewinia pectoralis ) is the type species. It was described by Coenraad Jacob Temminck in 1831 . There are seven recent subspecies that are common in New Guinea , Eastern Australia, Southeast Australia, and Tasmania. The subspecies Lewinia pectoralis clelandi from Southwest Australia has not been detected since 1931 and is considered to be probably extinct.
  • The Auckland rail ( Lewinia muelleri ) was described by Walter Rothschild in 1893 . For a long time it was only known from the type specimen acquired in 1874 before being rediscovered in 1966. It is endemic to the Auckland Islands , Adams Island and Disappointment Island. At times it was considered a subspecies of the Krickrale.
  • The Luzon rail ( Lewinia mirifica ) was described in 1959 by Dean Amadon and Kenneth C. Parkes . At times it was considered a subspecies of the Krickrale. Little is known about their way of life. The distribution area is limited to the Philippines island of Luzon .
