Lewis (cat)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lewis (born 2000 or 2001) is the name of a house cat from Fairfield, Connecticut who became famous for being placed under house arrest by a court . At the time, the cat was five years old.

background

Lewis is a polydactyl angora cat . In her neighborhood in Fairfield's Sunset Circle, there were frequent complaints that the cat would attack people for no reason. There are said to have been six attacks, only three of which led to a complaint. A woman recognized the cat at a confrontation . An animal trap imposed a ban on contact to Lewis. It was the first time that such a ban was imposed on an animal. Lewis should then be placed under house arrest. Initially, Lewis's exit times were limited and his owner tried to treat his aggressions with Prozac , but the cat kept getting away. In the meantime, the neighborhood had even organized a phone chain to protect themselves from the cat's attacks.

process

Lewis' owner was later arrested and charged with breaking the no-contact law. The animal catcher later changed the charge to "Reckless endangerment" (roughly: "Reckless endangerment"). The owner had to answer before the Supreme Court in Bridgeport in April 2006 . One of the victims sued the owner for $ 5,000 in damages . She was promised a suspended sentence if she had the animal euthanized . Instead, she litigated to save the cat's life. On May 23, 2006, charges were again brought.

The hearing began on June 20, 2006. The court eventually ruled that the cat must continue to be placed under house arrest. Since then, she has only been allowed to leave the house if she has to be taken to the vet. Its owner received two years probation. All charges were removed from her file after a two-year probationary period.

Media attention

The fact that a cat was charged and placed under house arrest caught the attention of the US and international media. In particular, the victims of the cat were treated with malice, who advocated euthanasia. Several campaigns developed around the cat. The Best Friends Animal Society in Utah offered to take the cat into their care in the event of a death sentence. A fan page for the cat was opened on Myspace , selling t-shirts to cover litigation costs. About 500 items of clothing were sold.
