Lewis Thomas Gobern (born January 28, 1985 in Birmingham ) is a former English football player . The former academy graduate of Wolverhampton Wanderers and right winger was denied the sporting breakthrough - also due to numerous injuries.

Athletic career

At the age of eleven, Lewis Gobern, whose younger brother Oscar later also became a professional footballer, joined the youth department of Wolverhampton Wanderers and went through the club's own academy. The right attacking midfielder gained his first professional experience at the third division Hartlepool United , to whom the "Wolves" had loaned him in November 2004 for a month. He made his debut on November 2, 2004 in the Football League Trophy against Carlisle United (1-0) and four days later followed his league debut against Doncaster Rovers (2-1). After a single league assignment for his home club on November 5, 2005 as a substitute against Norwich City (2-0), he found regular match practice only with new loan clubs in the 2005/06 season - these were the third division side between November 2005 and January 2006 Blackpool FC and, from March 2006 until the end of the season, Bury FC , which was one league lower.

Under the new Wolves trainer Mick McCarthy , Gobern immediately received another brief assignment; he was then steadily in the starting XI in autumn 2006 and scored his first two goals for Wolverhampton in two consecutive games against Crystal Palace and Leicester City at the turn of the month of November / December 2006 . However, his development subsequently suffered a severe setback when two independent Achilles tendon injuries after Christmas put him out of action for the rest of the current season. Gobern was able to recover and signed a new two-year contract in June 2007 before the next setback overtook him during the preparation for the season. A knee injury ensured that the entire 2007/08 season took place without him.

From August 2008, Gobern worked his way back to professional sport via the Wolves reserve team, and in January 2009 he was given the opportunity to gain experience in league football with third division club Colchester United until the end of the season. After his return, the club's leadership in Wolverhampton told him that the expiring contract should not be extended and Gobern was therefore advised to look for a new club. The third division team Milton Keynes Dons finally offered him a new chance at a new beginning . There Gobern signed a one-year contract before the start of the 2009/10 season, with the option of an additional year. In the end, it remained with only one, in which Gobern played only seven of 20 league appearances from the start as a supplementary player. Instead, he signed the next one-year contract in June 2010 with fifth-rate club Grimsby Town .
