Lewis Lake is the third largest lake in Yellowstone National Park . It is located at around 2,372 meters, just south of Shoshone Lake , on the road from Yellowstone Lake to the southern park entrance. The Lewis River flows into Lewis Lake in the north and leaves it again in the south. The water is clear and cold, the banks are heavily forested. Some hot springs flow in to the west.
The heart-shaped lake was given its name in August 1871 by participants in the Hayden expedition . There is a campsite on the shore of the lake. Boats can be launched at a jetty. Lewis Lake is especially popular with tourists for fishing, but the caught fish must be released again. The most common fish species in Lewis Lake is the brown trout .
