background
The Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Choir is a UK National Health Service (NHS) choir based in Lewisham and Greenwich , London . The choir was put together by Gareth Malone in 2012. He is a choir director and show master for the BBC and was looking for staff choirs across the country to compete against each other on his show Sing While You Work . The choir from south east London reached the finals.
The following year, the members recorded a single and chose a medley of Bridge over Troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel and Fix You by Coldplay as the song . In 2013, 10,000 of these were sold as downloads through internal advertising among friends.
Two years later, a resident doctor from Cambridgeshire discovered the video on the internet and had the idea of launching a Christmas campaign. Since the 1970s, the UK has had a special contest to see which song will be number one on the charts over the Christmas holidays, and in previous years social media had been used to promote certain candidates. Thanks to online support, a live appearance on BBC radio and the appeal for support from Justin Bieber , the only promising competitor , the choir finally succeeded with their song A Bridge over You , with 127,000 units sold, becoming the best-selling song of the week up to and including Christmas Eve . The proceeds were donated to charity and went to the organizations Carers UK and Mind , among others .
