Liškiava
Liškiava (German, 18th century: Lischkau ) is a village ( kaimas ) in the Merkinė part of the Rajongemeinde Varėna in southern Lithuania , located on the left bank of the Nemunas River (German Memel ) in the Dzūkija National Park . It has 37 inhabitants (as of 2005).
Several archaeological sites are known in Liškiava, including a castle hill piliakalnis and a cult site Alkakalnis .
The Church of the Holy Trinity, built between 1704 and 1720, and a Dominican monastery stand on the castle hill . There are seven in the church altars from the period of Rococo .
history
Liškiava was first mentioned in 1044. The village belonged to New East Prussia from 1795 ( Third Partition of Poland ) to 1807 ( Peace of Tilsit ) under the name Liszkowo (Polish) and was thus the easternmost municipality that ever belonged to Prussia .
