Li Xianting ( Chin. Lì Xiàntíng 栗 宪 庭; born December 22, 1949 , Jilin Province , People's Republic of China ) is one of the most important and influential Chinese art critics of the 1980s and 1990s. Always in favor of pluralism and artistic individualism, he played a key role in shaping the modern art scene, especially in Beijing .

Life and meaning

After graduating from the Department of Chinese Painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 1978, he initially worked as editor-in-chief of the two most influential art magazines in China: between 1979 and 1983 for the renowned Fine Art Magazine (美术 Měishù), as well as for 1985 to 1989 at China Fine Art Newspaper (中国 美术 报, Zhōngguó Měishùbào), one of the most progressive art magazines in China at the time.

During this time, he made numerous articles to promote the latest trends and artists who would later become some of the most prominent figures on the scene. This includes, among others, Fang Lijun , whose art is classified under the concept of cynical realism coined by Li Xianting . In addition, he also played a leading role in the organization and implementation of major exhibitions such as China / Avant-Garde (中国 现代 艺术 展, Zhōngguó Dāngdài Yìshù Zhǎn; February 1989, [Beijing], National Gallery).

Since the 1990s Li Xianting has been working more and more as a freelance critic and curator, and in recent years has also devoted himself to promoting independent film in China.
