Liangchen is a Chinese male given name.

Origin and meaning

The syntactic unit “良辰” (spoken: Liangchen), which consists of two characters, can be traced back to the poem by Ruan Ji (210-263) from the Wei Empire at the time of the Three Kingdoms . In the 9th poem of the poem cycle “Yong Huai” (咏 怀, literally “expressing thoughts”), the writer, famous for his literary work, admires the “beautiful, unforgettable time” so that he describes the transience of the golden age with the rhetorical question “How does the good time pass quickly? Now a layer of frost has formed on the clothing ”(Liang chen zai he xu, ning shuang zhan yi jin - 良辰 在 何许, 凝霜 沾 衣襟) described. In the following generations the term "Liangchen" has been used so often that it has become a recurring literary motif. The great poet Xie Lingyun (谢灵运), one of the greatest natural lyricists from the Song Kingdom of the Southern and Northern Dynasties, left the following quote: “It is difficult to have the four things at the same time: good time, beautiful scenery, delight and good news “(Tian xia liang chen, mei jing, shang xin, le shi, si zhe nan bing - 天下 良辰 、 美景 、 赏心 、 乐事 , 四 者 难 并). Immediately after the publication of the novel The Dream of the Red Chamber (红楼梦), the use of this promising expression “Liangchen” spread rapidly, as a line from the popular opera The Peony Pavilion (Mu Dan Ting - 牡丹 亭) by Tang Xianzu (汤显祖) from the Ming Dynasty of the protagonist Lin Daiyu (林黛玉) said: "What a wonderful time on such a beautiful day" (Liangchen mei jing nai he tian - 良辰美景 奈何 天).

Today's use as a male first name

Since the word "liang" itself stands for excellence and virtue, such a combination of characters "Liangchen" as a whole is used more and more frequently as a male first name. "Liangchen" is particularly popular in northern China, given its uncomplicated articulation. With regard to the fact that the first names, which consist of two characters, all have a more varied, nuanced meaning, they can therefore rarely be confused with one another and, thanks to their pronounceability, can be better combined with the last name. The first name "Liangchen" can be found in many current literary works: Su Liangchen (苏良辰) from the novel The good time is coming (良辰 讵 可 待), the pilot Dong Liangchen (董良辰), played by the native of Northwest China, Zhang Jiayi (张嘉 译) from the TV series "Flowers" (鲜花 朵朵). In addition, the well-known physicist Chen Liangchen (陈良辰), a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences , also has the same first name.
