The Libau Lake or Liepāja Lake ( Latvian : Liepājas ezers ) is a lake near the city of Liepāja in western Latvia . It is one of the largest lakes in Latvia.
The lagoon lake is separated from the sea by a dune several kilometers wide . As a result of eutrophication , the shallower parts of the lake are covered with extensive reeds . 15 islands cover a total area of 35 hectares. The bottom of the lake under a layer of sapropel is sandy. The largest tributaries are Bārta , Ālande and Otaņķe . Outflow into the Baltic Sea is the trade channel (lett. Tirdzniecības kanāls), which was completed in 1703 and serves as a port for the city of Libau. On the eastern side of the lake, facing away from the sea, there are extraction points for the city's drinking water needs.
At least 24 different fish species have been recorded in the lake. The lake is an important breeding area for birds and at the same time a recreational area for the city of Liepāja.
