The Libby Dam is a dam on the Kootenay River in the US state of Montana . He dams the river to Lake Koocanusa . The reservoir is part of the Columbia River system .

The dam, built between 1966 and 1972, is 27 km above the small town of Libby . The Libby Dam is a multi-purpose project. It is used for flood protection, energy generation and recreation. The dam is a 916 m long gravity dam made of concrete . The height above the foundation level is 129 m. The dam is designed for earthquakes measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale.
Lake Koocanusa
The 131 km long and up to 3.8 km wide reservoir extends as far as British Columbia in Canada . The southern 74 km of the reservoir are in Montana. The Canadian part of the reservoir lies in the area of the Rocky Mountain Trench fault zone . When the water level is normal, the water level is 749.5 m . The lake covers an area of 188.3 km². The reservoir's tributaries are the Kootenay River and Elk River . The usable storage volume is 6100 million m³. The maximum storage space is 7200 million m³. The flood relief is designed for 4106 m³ / s. The following types of fish are caught in Lake Koocanusa: rainbow trout , (West Slope) cutthroat trout , brook trout , sockeye salmon , burbot and herring vendace .
