Libellula needhami is a dragonfly - Art of the genus Libellula of the subfamily Libellulinae . Their distribution area extends in the plains of the Gulf Coast of the USA . The scientific name honors the American entomologist James George Needham (1868–1957).

Construction of the Imago
The animal reaches a length of 45 to 57 millimeters, 32 to 39 millimeters of which are on the abdomen . Young L. needhami and females are yellowish-brown on the face, thorax and abdomen. The males change color with age, except for the sides of the thorax, in a bright red. There is a dark line in the middle of the abdomen. The legs are entirely brown. The hind wings reach a length of 35 to 45 millimeters. Both pairs of wings have an amber or orange front half. The Pterostigma is yellow orange and Flügeladerung is down to the Costa black. The costa becomes lighter towards the pterostigma after the nodus .
Construction of the larva
The larvae have eyes located in the center of the face and a long abdomen that tapers towards the end. The edge of the unpaired front part of the labium , the so-called prementum, is smooth.
