Library Genesis or LibGen is a shadow library and search engine for books and scholarly articles . The project grants free access to copyrighted literature on its website, which is otherwise only available online behind payment barriers , and offers it for download . Among other things, Library Genesis obtains PDFs from Elsevier's online database ScienceDirect . The legality of the service, which - like the similar Sci-Hub project - is increasingly exposed to legal disputes, is controversial.

In 2015 the website got into a legal dispute when Elsevier took action against this form of book piracy . The website stated in the proceedings that it was registered in both Russia and Amsterdam , which made it difficult to assess which legislation would apply in the case. The judicial process should take place in the United States .

Access to LibGen is blocked by several Internet service providers on the network in different countries . However, such DNS -based locks are perceived as ineffective, as they can be bypassed, so that access cannot be completely prevented in this way.

In October 2015, a federal district court in New York State ruled that the website should be closed and that the libgen.org domain could no longer be used. However, access was still possible via various alternative domains on the website.

In July 2016, the database contained more than 52 million articles from over 50,000 publications.

In June 2018, a publisher successfully applied for an injunction against Vodafone at the Munich Regional Court. In February 2019, the Munich Higher Regional Court rejected an application filed later by the publisher against another provider because of formalities. In March 2019, based on a lawsuit brought by Elsevier and Springer Nature , the Parisian Tribunal de grande instance ordered that French internet access providers be obliged to block access to Sci-Hub and Library Genesis.
