Libreka (own spelling: libreka ! , formerly Volltextsuche Online (VTO)) was the name of a project by the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels to create a central interface for the storage, searchability, display and sale of digital versions of printed books . It has been integrated into Buchhandel.de's online offering since December 2014.

Technical implementation

After a tendering process, the Börsenverein selected the BookStore software , which is being developed by MPS Technologies in Delhi , a subsidiary of the Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group . The contracts between the Börsenverein subsidiary MVB and the Munich Holtzbrinck subsidiary hgv were signed on December 5, 2006.

Since the Leipzig Book Fair 2007, Libreka has been technically implemented by Bureau van Dijk Electronic Publishing (BvDEP).

Since October 2007, Libreka and the Directory of Deliverable Books (VLB) have merged so that the data found in one system can also be accessed in the other. The costs for recording the book data are currently EUR 3.50 net per year. The costs arise for each title listed in the VLB, even if the respective publisher does not want to use Libreka, so that there is a significant price increase compared to the previous annual VLB entry of 1.30 euros (electronic report without keywords).

The platform centrally saves book contents uploaded by participating publishers, which are converted from PDF to TIFF in an automated process free of charge for the publishers . The formal requirements for the data to be uploaded are very high compared to other systems (e.g. Google Book Search ). The publishers receive support from Libreka-certified printing companies. Libreka does not currently allow conversion to the proprietary final format by publishers or other providers, but reserves the right to charge additional costs for this conversion from 2008 onwards.

The full text search within the front end for users is carried out by Lucene .

A detailed rights management system based on corresponding customer profiles is in place, but it is viewed critically, as is Libreka's alleged lack of profitability.

Acquisitions

On December 15, 2014, Libreka was shut down as an independent platform and has been part of the Buchhandel.de service operated by MVB since December 18, 2014 .

On September 1, 2015, Linienwert GmbH from Rudolstadt (Thuringia) acquired the outsourced Libreka GmbH. The purchase agreement was signed on July 31, 2015, whereby the parties agreed not to disclose the purchase price. The Libreka brand wants to continue the associated technology with all employees in an independent division. A new location is to be opened in Frankfurt am Main for this purpose. Linienwert operates e-books online at alaria.de. There is no restriction to certain reading devices.
