With an area of 1.3 hectares, it is one of the larger lakes at this altitude. The smaller Rohrsee is located around 500 m further west of the Lichtsee . Both are part of the landscape conservation area Nößlachjoch - Upper Lake Starnberg - Tribulaune.

The lake has an excellent water quality of level I, the water hardly gets warmer than 14 ° C even in summer. Different types of trout live in the Lichtsee, which were already used in the time of Emperor Maximilian . The light lake gets its water supply mainly from rain and snowmelt.

The name of the lake comes from mhd. Borrowed with the meaning "bright", "without wooded surroundings" and can refer to both the clear water and the location above the tree line.
