The Lido Isle is an artificial island in Newport Beach in the US state of California . It is protected in Newport Bay , a bay with a connection to the Pacific Ocean . The island surrounded by the city was incorporated in 1906.

history

In 1904, Henry Huntington became a business partner of William S. Collins in the so-called Newport Beach Company . In return for the expansion of the Pacific Electric Railway to Newport Beach, Huntington was given one square kilometer of land. This included a sandbank that was initially known as Electric Island . The name was later changed to Pacific Electric Island and eventually Huntington Island .

A certain WK Parkinson bought the island from the railroad company in 1923 for $ 45,000 . He had previously made a fortune from oil discoveries at Bakersfield . Parkinson invested more than a quarter of a million US dollars in construction, had the harbor excavated and used the excavation to create an artificial island. A bridge, roads and landing stages were built to develop the island.

The project was one of the first planned settlements in California and should be kept in the European style. After the landfill was completed, the island was christened Lido Isle . This was done in honor of the Lido di Venezia beach near Venice . Since the aim was to preserve the Mediterranean character of the island, the streets were named after cities on the Mediterranean , such as Via Genoa, Via Ithaca and Via Nice. Most of the houses are kept in a corresponding architectural style to this day.

Lido Isle Club House

The geographical and social center of the island is the Lido Isle Club House . The facility is home to several clubs and associations, including the Lido Isle Yacht Club . There are nine other yacht clubs scattered across the city of Newport Beach .
