Our Lady Chapel from the northwest

The Liebfrauenkapelle is a cemetery chapel in Zwiefalten .

The 22 meter long and 11 meter wide hall church with a retracted rectangular choir and a small roof turret , which was given a new Baroque design in 1750/60 , goes back to a Benedictine monastery that was abandoned in the 14th century .

It was built around 1751 on the former Romanesque monastery church of St. Johannes (consecrated in 1146) in Gothic style in the context of a plague epidemic . According to masonry findings by the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments in Baden-Württemberg in 2010/11, today's appearance is a church based on Romanesque masonry, shortened in the west, which contains substantial remains of the old monastery church and not, as previously assumed, to a new Gothic building.
