The remains of the Liebsburg are to the left of the Auma in the Liebsdorf district of the city of Weida in the Greiz district in Thuringia .

history

The Liebsdorf district is located west of the core town of Weida, the seat of the Weida bailiffs, who were important in the High Middle Ages in East Thuringia and West Saxony. The village, presumably named after a locator with the name Liutbald , was mentioned in 1209 in a document from the Bailiffs von Weida "Luppoldestorff". About 800 meters south of the town center are the remains of the medieval castle , which was built on the top of the Auma river bend . Oral and written records about the castle are poor. In addition, small remnants of another fortification as a tower hill castle have been archaeologically proven in the Liebsdorf location on the hill “Der Hain” . Obviously, the tower hill castle is the original location, the much larger late medieval castle complex above the Auma was built as a fortification by the following generations of local nobility. The castle also served to protect the mills in the floodplain of the river bend and the oldest still preserved iron hammer mill in Thuringia.
