The Liechtenstein Embassy in Vienna is the diplomatic representation of the Principality of Liechtenstein for the Republic of Austria and for the Czech Republic in the Austrian capital Vienna . The embassy also acts as a permanent representative of the Liechtenstein government at the Vienna-based Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and at the United Nations (UN), which maintains one of four centers in Vienna. The current ambassador of the Principality of Liechtenstein in Vienna is Princess Maria-Pia Kothbauer .

The location of the embassy is a former city palace built in 1875 by the architect Viktor Rumpelmayer for the Figdor family at Löwelstrasse 8 in Vienna's first district , Inner City , which Liechtenstein shares with the Spanish embassy . The Liechtenstein City Palace , which is the Majorate House of the Liechtenstein Prince, is also located in the same building block . Both are in the immediate vicinity of the Federal Chancellery and the Parliament building .

history

The first diplomatic mission in the Republic of Austria was established in 1919, shortly after the fall of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy . Since Liechtenstein was always very closely linked to the Habsburg Monarchy , since all of Liechtenstein's rulers came from this country and resided in it for a long time, the establishment of a diplomatic embassy in German-Austria was one of the most urgent goals after the collapse of the monarchy. Prince Edward von und zu Liechtenstein became the first Liechtenstein ambassador in Vienna. Only two years later, Alfred von Balsass took over the management of the embassy as chargé d'affaires, who in turn was replaced after a few months by Dr. Josef Hoop was replaced.

The embassy in Vienna was dissolved again in 1923, and the Swiss Confederation assumed its representative function in Austria in accordance with an agreement with Liechtenstein. The Swiss Embassy in Vienna thus became the diplomatic center of bilateral relations between Liechtenstein and Austria.

Only in 1983 was a "Liechtenstein Embassy to the Republic of Austria" set up again. However, this was based in Bern , Switzerland and was therefore a non-resident diplomatic mission. Prince Heinrich von und zu Liechtenstein became the first non-resident ambassador of the Principality of Liechtenstein to the Republic of Austria. In 1991 Count Mario von Ledebur-Wicheln took over this office. When the CSCE General Secretariat was set up in Vienna in 1993 , Liechtenstein decided in 1994 to set up a “Permanent Mission to the CSCE”, which was subordinate to the Liechtenstein Embassy to the Republic of Austria in Bern. In 1996, the current ambassador Maria-Pia Kothbauer, Princess of Liechtenstein , took over the management of this permanent representation. A year later, she also took over the office of the previous ambassador, after the embassy had been led by Christine Stehrenberger as business agent ad interim for a short time after the Lederbur-Wichelns left the company.

As early as November 1997, the Landtag of the Principality of Liechtenstein gave its approval to convert the previous non-resident into a resident embassy in the Republic of Austria. In January 1998 the Liechtenstein embassy in Vienna was officially opened. Since 2000, there has also been a permanent representation at the United Nations in Vienna, which means that the embassy also took on the tasks of representation in those UN organizations to which the Principality of Liechtenstein has been an active member ( e.g. the IAEA since 1998 ).

With the resumption of diplomatic relations between Liechtenstein and the Czech Republic decided on April 8, 2009, the embassy in Vienna also became the starting point for Liechtenstein's diplomatic representation in the Czech Republic. On April 11, 2011, Ambassador Kothbauer accredited herself to the then Czech President Václav Klaus as Ambassador of the Principality of Liechtenstein in the Czech Republic. The diplomatic representation of Liechtenstein in the Czech Republic has since been carried out from the embassy in Vienna.
