Foundation and development

The choir was founded by the Mayor of Linz, Ignaz Figuly von Szep, in 1845 as a men's choir . From 1849 the choir called itself “Liedertafel Frohsinn” . In 1909, the name “Sängerbund Frohsinn” was given through the merger with the “Sängerbund” choir , a singing association founded by Alois Weinwurm in 1857. In 1960 the current name was given. The choir's repertoire consists of oratorios and contemporary works.

On November 30, 2005, on the occasion of the 160th anniversary of its existence in the Brucknerhaus , the choir and the Wartberg choir "pro musica" performed the oratorio "The Messiah" by Handel in the original English version.

The best-known member was Anton Bruckner , who was the cathedral and parish organist in Linz . From 1856 to 1868 Bruckner was active in various functions with the predecessors of this choir, initially as a chorus player (tenor), then a. a. as choirmaster of the Liedertafel Frohsinn.

From 1970 to the end of 2011 Johannes Wetzler was choir master, then Eduard Matscheko . Alexander Koller has been his successor since January 1, 2015 .
