Johannes Wetzler

Johannes Wetzler (born July 11, 1936 in St. Ingbert ; † June 7, 2020 ) was a German-Austrian conductor , musician and choir director .

Youth and education

Johannes Wetzler first attended elementary school and high school in St. Ingbert. As main instruments he learned violin and piano. He graduated from high school in Trier. This was followed by studying musicology at the Saarbrücken University of Music . From 1959 to 1961 Wetzler continued his studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna . His teachers included Hans Swarowsky (conducting), Hans Gillesberger (church and school music) and Ferdinand Grossmann (singing). He completed his studies with the examination for Kapellmeister .

Career

An engagement at the then Stadttheater Saarbrücken , directed by Hermann Wedekind , led him back to Saarland . There he demonstrated his musical diversity both as a tenor buffo and as a conductor and assistant director. A three-year interlude from 1965 to 1968 formed the work as organist , choirmaster and sexton in the Catholic Sacred Heart congregation in the Altenwald parish . Another station on his career path began in 1968 in Klagenfurt, where he worked as choir director and conductor until 1970. From autumn 1970 Wetzler directed the musical fortunes of the Landestheater Linz , first as choir director and from 1974 also as conductor , to which he remained loyal until he retired in 2001. His creative period was characterized by numerous, sometimes acclaimed performances from operas, operettas and musicals. In addition to this activity, Wetzler was active until the end of 2011 as the choir master of the Linz Singakademie , as the conductor of the Linz University Orchestra and the Linz Concert Association .

In 1989 Wetzler received the honorary badge of the Johannes Kepler University Linz , in 1995 the silver badge of honor of the state of Upper Austria.

Johannes Wetzler lived in Linz and had taken Austrian citizenship. He was the father of two sons.
