The Linz Concert Association is an amateur orchestra that organizes two symphony concerts a year in the Brucknerhaus Linz.

History of the club

The Linz Concert Association is one of the oldest amateur orchestras in Austria. It emerged in 1919 from a house music group under the name "Tonzunft". Six years later, in 1925, the club name was changed to Linz Concert Association. The number of active musicians increased and the audience grew in number.

In the 1930/31 season, concerts with the theater orchestra, the Linzer Musikerbund and the Linzer Musikverein were on the program. Professional musicians unselfishly supported the concert association's orchestral work. This tradition has continued to this day.

Due to the war, the association put its concert activities "dormant" and thus escaped being dissolved by the Nazi authorities. After the war, the musicians who had returned wanted to resume their concert activities, but encountered great difficulties. Instruments were missing, the venue, the commercial club house on Bismarckstrasse was partially bombed and the American crew was not exactly helpful either. But the musicians did not give up and on June 28, 1947 the Linz Concert Association played the first symphony concert in Linz after the Second World War in the clubhouse.

Anton Konrath became permanent conductor until 1955 . He was followed by Michael Hutterstrasser, conductor of the Linz theater orchestra, until 1961. From 1961 to 1990 Leopold Mayer took over the artistic direction. Since then, changing guest conductors have led the orchestra.

Many international instrumentalists were guests at the Linz Konzertverein, such as Mitsuko Uchida , pianist (1966), Rudolf Buchbinder , pianist (1962 and 1968), Jörg Demus , pianist (1959, 1960 and 61), Ernst Kovacic , violinist (1969 and 1973) , Rainer Küchl , concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic (1971 and 1978), Hugo Rottensteiner, 1st bassoonist of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra (1927 and 1957), Benjamin Schmid , violin (1986), Wolfgang Schneiderhan , violin (1952, 1953 and 1956), Wilfried Tachezi, cellist (1984), Walter Weller , Vienna Philharmonic and former concertmaster of the Linz Concert Society (1934 and 1936) and Clemens Zeilinger , pianist (1994 and 2011).

Vocal soloists who made careers in the international music business from Linz also sang, accompanied by the Linz Konzertverein, such as Piotr Beczała , tenor (1994), Donna Ellen , soprano (1989), William Ingle, tenor (1983, 1985 and 1989), Kathleen Kaun, soprano (1983), Riccardo Lombardi , baritone (1985 and 1992) and Karl Ridderbusch , bass (1992).

The merits of the Linz Concert Association did not go unnoticed. In 1957 he was awarded the “Honorary Plaque of the City of Linz” for special services to the musical life in Linz, in 1978 the “Merit of the State of Upper Austria” to the then chairman Wolfram Ziegler for his services to the Linz Concert Association and in 1983 the “Culture Medal of the City of Linz ".

After the death of consultant Wolfram Ziegler, who directed the fate of the association for 39 years until his death in 2006, he was succeeded by Mag. Arnold Wiesberger until 2010, who was replaced by the former managing director Hans Lißberger.
